New Scoop Podcast: Meet comedian Tommy North 🎤

October's Scoop podcast is out, and Charles has been chatting to Tommy North this month. Tommy is a Warrington-based comedian and a former manager at the suicide prevention charity Papyrus. He started out during lockdown, and now performs across the North West comedy circuit.

His comedy is all about suicide prevention, using humour and everyday experiences to cut down the stigma and get people talking. He recently won best comedian at the Bay Fringe Festival with his show, Standup to Suicide, and he's now aiming to tour and run corporate wellbeing workshops. You can follow him on Instagram at @tommynorthcomedy.

You can watch the episode in the YouTube video above, or if you'd rather just listen, click here to find it on all your favourite players.

🚌 A picture popped up on my Facebook of one of the small buses that used to go around town. These could get down the little side roads, and were really helpful. Does anyone know when these stopped?

🎃 Here is a list of pumpkin patches for you from in and around Warrington.

🛑 If you haven’t been into the town centre for a while, then here is a little update on the Sankey Street roadworks for you, which are still ongoing.

🛍 Do we have more Lidl’s or Aldi’s across town now? Tough one isn’t it? I haven’t actually worked it out, but let us know your guess in the comments.

🤣 I honestly think I could make a new meme every day just about the roundabouts and traffic in Warrington and you lot wouldn’t get bored of them haha. Here is another cracker for you!

Did you ever visit the Village Farm House & Coffee Shop in Bridge Street? It didn’t last long, and now its been repossessed.

If you are after a day out this weekend, then why not head down to watch Warrington Town against Lancaster City? Their ground is in Latchford (WA4 2RS) and kick off is at 3pm.

We went down the other week, and it was a great day out. It’s £13 for adults, £9 for concessions and £3 for under 16’s. The match day food is great (we recommend the pies, peas and gravy) and pints are under £4 each. Check out the video we put together above.

💛 Zhanna fled Ukraine with her mum and made "I Am Still Here" to share what it felt like to start again in Warrington. It's an anti-bullying display at the Living Well Hub on Horsemarket Street, and a lovely reminder to look out for each other. It's only up until today, so pop in during normal opening hours if you can, and there's more on it from the council.

🏉 A big Warrington pat on the back for Matty Ashton, Ben Currie and George Williams, who have all been named in England's squad for the Rugby League World Cup, with George captaining the side again. England kick off against Tonga on Saturday 17th October, so send them some good luck. Full squad here.

🦿 Halton Hospital has carried out its first robotic-assisted knee replacement. The patient, Andrew Robinson, a 66-year-old retired HGV mechanic from Warrington, was home the very next day and says he's already surprised by how much movement he has. Read more from the NHS trust.

🎂 The Encounter Centre in Birchwood is turning 10, and everyone's invited to celebrate with them on Thursday 15th October, 10am to 4pm. There'll be free tea, coffee and scones with jam and cream, with a thanksgiving ceremony and a toast at 2pm. No booking needed, and the event page has all the details.

Anne and Mary both cracked last Friday's Wordle in just two guesses, so the bar has officially been set. Today's word has a loose Warrington connection (as always), so have a proper think before you fire off your first guess, then reply and tell me how you got on.

Clue at the bottom of the email if you need it.

House of the week 🏠

Right, this one's for you if you've ever looked at a normal three-bed semi and thought, yeah, but where's the stained glass window?

It's The Old Chapel in Moore, and it's exactly what it sounds like. An actual chapel, turned into a home by an architect, and on the market for £500,000. You walk in to a double-height reception area with the original stained glass window still in place, there's a log burner in the lounge, an open plan kitchen, a study, and three double bedrooms. Round the back there's a west-facing garden, and you get two parking spaces too.

Have a look here on Rightmove.

Council Catch-Up 📰

Cabinet meets on Wednesday 14th October at 1 Time Square, and the agenda is already out. Here's the short version that you might want to know.

🏡 A big new neighbourhood in south east Warrington. Cabinet is being asked to approve the framework for the land between Stockton Lane in Grappenhall and the M56, around Grappenhall Heys. It covers at least 4,200 homes over time, with two new primary schools, a secondary school, health and leisure facilities and shops. The framework has to be agreed before any planning applications can go in.

💷 Council Tax Support from April 2027. The council wants to consult on a simpler, income-banded way of working out support for working-age residents, with the maximum support going up from 78% to 86.5%. The consultation is due to open on 15th October, and support for pensioners isn't changing.

Want to read it for yourself? Here's the full Cabinet agenda pack (it's a big PDF), but this is what we've summarised.
