Good morning, Warrington. Mike here. This is The Warrington Scoop, the local newsletter that’s like the group chat where one person has done a mad amount of research into what’s on locally and is absolutely delighted to tell you about it 😄

In today’s Scoop:

  • There’s a new edition of the Warrington Scoop podcast out 🎙

  • Have you ever noticed this random massive boulder? 🪨

  • Great Sankey summer fun day and dog show 🎢

Grab your favourite brew, and let's start.

P.S. We always try to stay positive in the Scoop, but it is sad to hear that the Hancock and Wood department store, which has been in the town for 112 years, is set to close.

Here are some positive stories from around the town over the past few days.

⚽ With the World Cup kicking off yesterday, here's a brilliant bit of local history. Back in 1966, the Brazil squad, including Pelé and Garrincha, stayed at the Lymm Hotel during the tournament, riding local kids' bikes around the village and signing autographs. You can now see the full story at Lymm Heritage Centre on Legh Street, where an exhibition runs until late August. Open Thursday to Sunday, 12 til 4. (Warrington Worldwide)

🐔 Callands Care Home has welcomed four new residents, Bluebell, Willow, Lavender and Poppy. The chickens were introduced following a resident vote and have already been bringing smiles and laughter to the home. One cheeky hen called Willow has apparently been caught admiring herself in the mirror. Love this. (Warrington Guardian)

🥗 A new healthy eating spot has opened in Warrington. PrepLab, based at Evans House Business Centre on Norman Street, lets you build your own meal boxes choosing from proteins, carbs, greens and sauces. They also offer weekly meal plans and both takeaway and dine-in options. (Warrington Guardian)

This month, we celebrate 1 year of the Warrington Scoop podcast (how time flies). Charles, who hosts it, has been amazing, and we have met some great people. This time, he asked whether he could interview me (I agreed) as he wanted me to tell my story about why I started the Scoop, etc.

🪨 Have you ever noticed this massive boulder before…… it’s even got its own plaque? Proper random isn’t it, but it attracted quite a lot of attention on social media and was viewed over 60,000 times on Facebook. Who would have thought this would have been so popular?

🏰 Did you know that there used to be a castle in Warrington? Well…. there is a kick starter to raise funds to explore of the site it was on. We will do an update about it in a future email for you as well.

🤔 Let’s test your Warrington knowledge…. Do you know where we are in this video?

Great Sankey Summer Fun Day and Dog Show

The forecast looks good for this one (no rain forecast). A Summer Fun Day and Dog Show is taking place at Dakota Park in Chapelford this Sunday 14th June from 12pm to 4pm. There are loads on for all the family, including fairground rides for £1, free face painting, live performances, dance displays, and plenty of food stalls.

💃 I came across this daytime dancing over 30’s day thats going to take place at the Brickhaus, which I thought you might like. It’s something a bit different, and I know most of the Scoop readers are over 30 😀

🏉 Warrington Wolves are running a kids-for-a-quid game for their clash against the Catalan Dragons on Thursday, the 25th of June.

👗 This Sunday, Fond in Lymm is hosting The Hello Joy Wardrobe Edit, a second hand clothes pop-up with a fabulous-only policy, raising money for Prevent Breast Cancer as part of the Paint Lymm Pink appeal. Perfect if you're looking for a great outfit for Daresbury Festival! Find out more at fondshop.co.uk/the-hello-joy-wardrobe-edit

🍛 Warrington Scouts are hosting a curry night fundraiser at The Raj in Culcheth on Wednesday 17th June from 7pm. Tickets are £25 per person and all funds go towards sending local young people to the World Scout Jamboree in Poland in 2027.

🏃 Warrington road runners are hosting their 10k race next Tuesday evening, which has been running for 40 years. It is two very flat laps through Woolston Park and the surrounding area.

Meet Smithy (isn’t he lovely), he is 10.5 months old and is the 29th guide dog that Karin Snape has trained. Karin is at many of the artisan markets, doing a lot of fundraising for the guide dogs. She is at Dakota Park this weekend, for the family fun day, and Bents on the 20th and 21st. You can find out more about what Karin is up to on her fundraising Facebook page, which provides updates on her and the dogs.
