Good morning, Warrington. Mike here. This is The Warrington Scoop.
It was a busy one in Warrington this weekend (and a hot one, too). Did you get out to anywhere nice? We had the Makers Market in town and Disability Awareness Day at Walton Gardens… Cheshire Steam Fair at Daresbury and 100 more things going on!
Grab your favourite brew, and let's start. ☕

🪧 We noticed a sign on Hilden Square this week (not sure how we have never noticed it before), so maybe you haven’t either? It’s to do with Warrington being twinned with the German town of Hilden. About 18 years ago, the mayor of Warrington and representatives of Hilden put up this sign (and probably discussed other stuff as well). A proper random little fact, but something you might not have known.
🦖 Have you been to the Golden Square lately? There’s a massive dinosaur that you can’t miss, and it is there to promote Warrington Comic Con, which takes place next Saturday. The last event was great, so make sure you get down to this year’s.
🛍 We thought that TJ Hughes had been shut for a while (or maybe we timed it badly). The sign says it's just shut for “today,” but it appears it’s been shut for over a month. Bit of a shame to see such a large shop being shut isn’t it….. what else would work here?

🧀 A lovely new deli and wine bar called Truffle has opened at 5 The Cross in Lymm, offering wine, cheese boards, charcuterie, organic produce and food platters in a beautiful setting. Open seven days a week. The kind of place you go in for one glass and end up staying all afternoon 🤣
🚶 This sounds like a great initiative. Warrington Borough Council are launching free monthly guided walks around the town centre, starting this Thursday 16th July, in partnership with the Living Well Hub and LiveWire Warrington. They're designed to help people get active, boost their wellbeing and meet new people.
👟 Warrington Youth Zone have teamed up with Running Bear and ASICS for a free social 5km run in Victoria Park this Tuesday 14th July. You'll also get to test out the latest ASICS trainers on the day.

🚌 Good news for families this summer. Children aged 5 to 15 will be able to travel for free on buses throughout August as part of the government's Great British Summer Savings scheme. Warrington's Own Buses will be taking part, meaning kids can get out and about across the area without it costing a penny. (Warrington Guardian)
🎯 The Carl Risley Heart Foundation are hosting a charity darts tournament and family fundraising evening on Saturday 25th July at St Benedict's Social Club on Rhodes Street in Orford, raising money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of Carl Risley. Last year they raised over £2,500 and this year they're hoping to go even bigger. (Warrington Guardian)
🐾 Good news for pet owners in Warrington. Animal Trust on Centre Park has launched a 24/7 emergency vet service, meaning you can get urgent care for your pet at any time of day or night. The out-of-hours emergency fee is £79, with all further treatment charged at standard daytime rates. (Warrington Guardian)

Thanks for all the lovely feedback on the latest podcast episode about the Warrington Castle project. Quite a few of you have said how much you are loving the new format, and it shows in the number of listens we are now getting.
Poll results from Friday 📊
On Friday, we asked you if you would be up for a discount on your council tax if you agreed to help out with community work (cutting grass, etc.), and of course, all hypothetical. I also know that the Scoop audience loves Warrington (or you wouldn’t be reading this), so it’s only a small, positive segment of the town, but the overall answer is that most people would.

Thanks 👍
Thanks for reading The Warrington Scoop today.
If you found this useful, please share it with someone who remembers when we had those small buses in town that could get down all the side streets.
Catch you on Friday.
Mike
