Duck race, heritage open days and what's on this weekend

Plus: Warrington Wordle, and great news for cyclists

Good morning, Warrington. Mike here. This is The Warrington Scoop.

Autumn’s creeping up on Warrington, and the heating wars have already started. One side’s in jumpers, the other’s sneaking the thermostat up (you know who you are 🤣 ).

In today’s Scoop:

  • Warrington’s Heritage Open Days Are Back This September 🗝️

  • Great news for Warrington cyclists 🚲️

  • Your weekend guide to what’s on around town 🗓️

  • Warrington Wordle 🧠

  • Where are we today? 📸

Grab your favourite brew, and let's start. ☕️

P.S. We took a break on Monday, with it being a bank holiday, but thank you for all the concerned emails asking why they didn’t get their Monday email 😀

The Great Warrington Duck Race 🦆

This Sunday (31 August) the River Mersey gets taken over by… ducks. Don’t worry, not real ones. It’s the Great Warrington Duck Race at Warrington Rowing Club, 12–4pm.

You can back a duck for just £1 and cheer it down the river. Alongside the racing there’ll be fairground rides, craft and cake stalls, Punch & Judy, a penny arcade and plenty more to keep everyone busy.

A proper family afternoon on the riverbank, and all for a quid a duck.

Warrington’s Heritage Open Days Are Back This September 🗝️

Heritage Open Days are back in September with 22 free events across 17 different sites in Warrington. There are far too many to cram into one email (as we just give you the Scoop), but here are a few that stand out:

  • Big Battlefield Walks – Battle of Winwick 1648: retrace the footsteps of one of the most important clashes in the Civil War.

  • Discover the Hidden Transporter Bridge: a talk uncovering the stories behind Warrington’s iconic bridge.

  • Museum of Policing in Cheshire Open Day: if you’ve never been, this one’s always worth a visit.

You can check out the full programme and booking details here. I’ll definitely be attending a few of these and hopefully tell you more about them in the Scoop.

From The Papers 📰

I am not joking when I say that…….. it was hard work to find these. The local paper was filled with crime and politics……..This is the exact reason that the Scoop was started!

🍸️ Well-known bar with 'excellent reputation' for sale in Warrington (Warrington Guardian)

New Warrington Scoop Podcast Episode Out On Monday 🎙️

Episode 3 of the Warrington Scoop podcast will be out on Monday. This time, we will be interviewing Megan from Activity Angels as she tells us all about the events she organises and how they are helping to tackle loneliness across the town.

Here’s the link to the previous episodes, where you can subscribe, ready for episode 3 😃

Great news for Warrington cyclists 🚲️

A brand-new secure cycle parking hub has just opened on Horsemarket Street. It’s free, open 24/7, and you just need the app to get in. A safe spot to leave your bike can only be a good thing for the town.

If you are wondering where it is, it’s right next to the bus station.

Don’t Forget It’s Gulliver’s World’s Fireworks 🎆

Just a quick note for pet owners in the area (and for those that want to watch it), at about 8:30 to 8:45pm on Saturday, there will be a large fireworks display from Gulliver's World, so if you suddenly start hearing fireworks, that’s where they are coming from.

Warrington Wordle 🧠

I had to add another Wordle, as the last one received so many clicks that it suggests you are really enjoying it. Last week’s was tricky, with a few of you really having to think about it.

Is today’s Wordle easier? That’s up to you to decide……... As always, please let me know how you got on by replying to this email. Remember, every Wordle is somehow related to Warrington!

Thanks 👍️

Thanks for reading The Warrington Scoop today.

If you found this useful, please share it with someone who works in a school and has enjoyed their long summer holiday, but they will be back at work next.

Catch you on Monday.

Mike
